Another milestone of progress has been recorded as BSiN team visited Wesley Girls Junior Secondary School, Yaba-Lagos, today, the 18th day of July, 2019.
Break The Silence Initiative Nigeria, BSiN is a non-governmental organisation committed to deterring all forms of child abuse and drug abuse in the society through Sensitization, Health Care Services, Counseling, Publication and Rehabilitation.
In line with our objectives, we took our laudable prevention program themed ” Arming Children with Knowledge; A guide against Child Abuse and Drug Abuse” to Wesley Girls Junior Secondary School. At the end of the sensitization exercise, many students came out to reveal what has been bothering them. Some of the students have been experiencing sexual molestation by their private(home) lesson teachers, cousins, and step fathers while a few are undergoing psychological trauma as survivors of sexual abuse. A follow up strategy was initiated for all cases.
Noteworthy is it that, during our one-on-one interactive session with the survivors, we discovered, that most of the students undergoing the phase of sexual abuse at homes have failed to disclose the secrecy of abuse to their aunts(guardians) due to fear of disbelief occassioned by the threat being subjected to, by the perpetrators.Parents and carers are advised to create enabling environment for their children and wards towards building confidence and trust. Being a present parent is key to breaking the secrecy of child abuse. Learn more by following us on our media channels.
